Restoring environmental water flows, rehabilitating wetlands, and protecting aquatic ecosystems — because clean, healthy water is the foundation of all life.
Water is life — and nowhere is this more literally true than in the agricultural heartland of Uttar Pradesh, where the health of rivers, ponds, and wetlands directly determines the wellbeing of millions of people and countless species. Yet India's water bodies are under severe stress: over-extraction, pollution, and encroachment have degraded river systems, drained wetlands, and depleted aquifers.
Bionectus works to restore and protect aquatic ecosystems through community-based water body rejuvenation, pollution reduction advocacy, and wetland protection programmes. We recognise that water rehabilitation is simultaneously an environmental, agricultural, and social justice issue.
Our work in the Gangetic plains focuses on ponds, lakes, and small rivers — the water bodies that rural communities depend on most directly but which receive the least attention from government and conservation agencies.
We use community-led water body restoration — engaging local people in desilting, bund repair, and pollution control — backed by technical guidance and government liaison. This approach creates ownership and ensures long-term maintenance.
We also work with farmers to adopt water-efficient practices, reducing the extraction pressure on groundwater and surface water bodies while improving agricultural productivity and resilience to drought.
Rehabilitating degraded wetlands to restore biodiversity, water storage, and flood protection functions.
Community-led desilting, bund repair, and water quality improvement for village ponds and seasonal lakes.
Monitoring and advocacy for improved river flows, pollution reduction, and riverbank protection in our region.
Protecting fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates through habitat restoration and fishing practice improvement.
Promoting rainwater harvesting and infiltration structures to replenish depleted groundwater reserves.
Community campaigns and government advocacy to reduce agricultural chemical and solid waste pollution of water bodies.
"A river reaching the sea is nature's highway of life. When we restore our rivers and wetlands, we restore the living systems that every creature — including ourselves — depends upon."
